differences between the two wireless systems

The Digital Wireless Cedar Bird Box with 800TVL Sony Eiffo CCD Colour Camera.

Cedar bird box with Digital wireless transmitter and Ultra High Resolution 800TVL Sony Eiffo CCD colour camera with infrared and audio - a day / night camera.

Digital wireless System uses the latest technology, the signal is digitally encrypted and much more powerful than the analogue systems with a longer range. The advantage of using digital is that you will get interference free video and audio as these devices are paired and will automatically change channel if they detect a signal being used by another device such as a wireless computer router etc. The range of the digital wireless is also greater upto approximately 150 metres line of sight. The electronics are however larger than the analogue wireless system and are housed externally on the roof in a rainproof casing.

Digital systems use new expensive technology and many adverts will claim their systems are "digital" when they are just actually 8 channel analogue systems. True digital systems will have 80 channels, the signal will be encripted and the transmitter and receiver will communicate with each other and seemlessly change channels automatically to give the best performance.

We have a page here on the differences between analogue and digital wireless, there are pros and cons with each system.

The bird box has two circular 32mm panels on the sides to let in extra light. In good light it produces clear colour images. When the light level falls a photo cell turns on the infrared LEDs and the image turns progressively to a black and white image. In total darkness it will produce a clear black and white image. The infrared light is invisible to the naked eye, harmless to the birds and does not disrupt their natural daytime / nightime cycles which artificial light does. Colour images can only be produced with visible light, colour images are therefore only possible during the daytime.

The picture (video signal) and sound (audio signal) are sent to a receiver by a digital wireless 2.4ghz transmitter. There is no need to run cables from the bird box to your TV. The "receiver base" is placed near your TV or monitor and plugs into one of the TV's AV channels via the provided AV cable or plugged into a spare AV channel on a video recorder to allow recording of the pictures and sound. The camera operates on the "licence exempt" 2.4ghz frequency, which is CE compliant throughout the EU. The wireless system has an unobstructed transmission range of approximately 150m. Going through obstacles reduces the range.

Please Note:
  • Wireless refers to how the Video and Audio is transmitted. I.e. there is no cable connected between the bird box and the TV. However, the bird box requires power to run the camera, transmitter and infrared, it is powered through the supplied 12V DC power supply and 10m cable plugged into the nearest mains socket, e.g. shed, garage etc. (if 10m is insufficient then 10m extension cables are available). It can also be run from one of our Rechargeable Lithium Ion Battery Packs.

  • The wireless signal will be blocked by metallic objects, e.g. a metal clad wall.

  • Not all wireless systems are the same. Wireless cameras must operate on the 2.4Ghz band to be legal, 1.2Ghz wireless cameras are illegal to use in the UK. Our 2.4Ghz wireless systems use the highest quality components to maximise the range and signal quality. Some companies may tell you wired is better than wireless, what they mean is they have not been able to perfect the wireless system. We offer both wired and wireless, there are advantages and disadvantages to both systems.
